Hi everyone!
Busy times for the Erins right now: Kate is working on Power of Three #4: Eclipse, Cherith is tackling Seekers #2, and Vicky is...unpacking her suitcase. Well, it was a very long tour! She had a fabulous time, meeting hundreds of fans and signing thousands (literally) of books. Her favorite places were Phoenix, AZ, and California, which were both much more beautiful than she expected. She was very sad to hear of the devastating fires which hit the Los Angeles area the week after she visited; all the Erins hope any fans living in the region, and their families and homes, are safe and undamaged.
While we're busy with forthcoming books (and sorting out laundry J), you can start looking forward to the next TWO titles to hit the stores, both of which come out on December 26th. Power of Three #2: Dark River focuses on Lionpaw's burgeoning relationship with Heatherpaw of WindClan. Relationships across Clan boundaries always lead to trouble—but this time it's not the fact that they’re secretly meeting which is the problem, but where the lovestruck apprentices choose to meet . . .
This will also be your chance to catch up with the second episode in Graystripe's manga adventures, Warrior's Refuge. Graystripe and kittypet Millie left Twolegplace and have set out in search of the forest, driven by the homing instinct that all cats have. Even though Graystripe couldn't see out of the truck when he was taken from his home by Twolegs, a quiet tugging feeling inside him tells him which way he needs to go in order to return to the forest. But of course, we know more than Graystripe about what's been going on since he was stolen—even if he does find his way back, will his Clan be waiting for him?
Most of the time, reading a book means that you share a character's experience from the start of the story to the end, finding out things as he or she does, and sharing their feelings of hope, surprise, joy, or disappointment as events unfold. For example, when Firestar first arrived in the forest as the naïve kittypet Rusty, we didn't know anything about the Clans, either, so we learned along with him. But for Graystripe's manga adventures, we're going back in time, having already seen what happened to the forest and the Clans after he was taken away. This gives us an extra layer of knowledge so we don't just share Graystripe's experiences, but have the excitement—and dread—of knowing what he'll discover when he reaches his former home.
Have you visited warriorcats.com recently? Hopefully you followed Vicky's tour through her epic daily diary. Lots of fans who came to the signings have found their warrior names from the Name Generator; Vicky's warrior name is Mousepaw, by the way, which is perfect because her family nickname has been Mouse since she was a little girl! This month, the first Ask Erin Hunter Q&As have been posted. We love sharing details about how the stories are developed, and why certain characters act the way they do; you are such curious, intelligent readers, and it's great to see how much you appreciate the depth of the cats' world. But remember, none of the Erins will give away what happens in future books. You'll have to read them to find out!
Oh, one last thing. I'm writing this on Bonfire Night here in the UK (November 5th), which means lots and lots of fireworks going off after dark. I know you guys don't celebrate this in the US, but you have fireworks at other times of the year, so please, please remember to look after your kittypets! Even the bravest warriors get spooked by loud bangs, so if there are going to be fireworks in your neighborhood, make sure all the cats you know are safely indoors, with a cozy place for them to hide. Vicky's dog Missy is as cowardly as the tiniest kit, and manages to find new hiding places every year. This time she got wedged between the sofa and the living room wall, and it was more than an hour before Vicky found her! Sadly, there’s nothing you can do to make your kittypet feel less frightened—if only you could explain that the noise is connected with the pretty colors in the sky, and won’t hurt them at all—but if they have a dark, cozy place where they feel safe, they're much more likely to forget they were scared when the display is over.
Next time I write, it will almost be the holidays. Yay!
Very best wishes,
Erin
